David Wieck (1921—), now a philosophy professor at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, was editor and the major writer for Resistance, one of the best anarchist periodicals. Published from 1947 to 1954, it was a continuation of Why? (1942–47). It was the organ of the now defunct Resistance Group, which was formed after World War II to oppose war and militarism while advocating anarchism. Its members urged and practiced draft resistance long before war in Vietnam made such actions relatively common. This essay is representative of recent anarchist philosophy; for other examples one might well read some of the work of Paul Goodman, also a member of the Resistance Group and author of the last piece in this volume.

Anarchy, as a political ideal, means simply “no government.” There are, therefore, a number of theories about anarchy, all accurately labeled “anarchism.” This leads on the one hand to confusion, but on the other hand to a free and presumably valuable conflict of ideas. So we shall not worry over it here. We shall confine ourselves to the essentials of what the writer considers the best in anarchist thought, and arbitrarily call it “anarchism.” …
